25th March - Morwellham Quay

Morwellham Quay

Class 2 visited the historic port and village of Morwellham Quay this week. The children had a glimpse of what life was like for the Victorian families of a rural village. The children were excited to take part in the manual labour of rope making using a machine called a Jack. They were surprised to learn that children as young as seven took on this job to help provide for their families. They also had the chance to dress in Victorian style clothing and learned about the different clothes men, women and children would wear depending on their wealth.

The afternoon ended with a truly immersive trip inside the Charlotte and George copper mine. They heard about how boys worked hard to survive in the mines and how the bal maidens spent up to 12 hours a day breaking apart rocks to extract the copper.
