PSHE and SMSC

At Delabole Community Primary School our staff are totally committed to promoting children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development. Within this are inextricably woven the fundamental values of democracy:

  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance

These crucial elements ere embedded within our Enquiry Curriculum, as well as being taught through Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), Religious Education (RE), Safeguarding, the Rights of the Child and British Values. Through the teaching of these values, we aim to ensure our pupils are able reflect on their unique attributes, have a strong sense of self driven by an unerring moral compass, and are therefore equipped to contribute to a life of tolerance through the development of a deeply humanitarian outlook.

 

 What is SMSC?

The pupils' Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development is not a stand-alone curriculum element, but rather a thread running through every aspect of learning. It is a consistently framed, clearly defined ethos which underpins our core vision for every individual. In all that we do, we aim to keep the child 'visible' and ensure that we - alongside parents and the community - are shaping the 'whole child'.

 

Spiritual Development  (Ofsted)

Explore beliefs and experience, respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; be reflective.

 

Moral Development  (Ofsted)

Recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views.

 

Social Development (Ofsted)

Use a range of social skills; participate in the local community; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, voluteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, liberty, respect and tolerance.

 

Cultural Development (Ofsted)

Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain's parliamentary system; participate in cultural opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

 What is PSHE?

PSHE education is defined by the school's inspectorate, Ofsted, as a planned programme to help children and young people to develop fully as individuals and as members of families and social and economic communities.

 

At Delabole Community Primary School we have adopted the Jigsaw Scheme of Work which is a mindful approach to PSHE. Jigsaw PSHE brings together Personal, Social, Health and Economic education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a sequence of weekly lessons. We have ensured that the Jigsaw themes are linked to our Core Values so that both are mutually enhanced, and learning is deepened and reinforced through meaningful connections across the curriculum.
