Science at Delabole Primary School:
At Delabole, we want children to develop a lasting sense of curiosity about the world around them. Science provides opportunities to question, investigate and discover, helping children to make sense of the fascinating world in which they live.
Through practical experiences, discussion and enquiry, children develop their understanding of biology, chemistry and physics, whilst learning how scientific knowledge is created and tested. They are encouraged to think carefully, ask questions, make predictions and use evidence to explain their ideas and conclusions.
We believe that science should be active, engaging and meaningful. Whether exploring our local environment, observing seasonal change, investigating materials or carrying out practical enquiries, children learn best when they experience science first-hand. These experiences help them make connections between classroom learning and the world beyond school.
Our Learning Toolkit supports children throughout their scientific journey. Curiosity drives investigation, resilience encourages children to learn from unexpected results, and independence, participation and risk-taking help them become reflective and resourceful learners. These qualities help children develop both as scientists and as lifelong learners.
Above all, we want children to leave Delabole with an appreciation of the role science plays in everyday life and with the confidence to keep questioning, exploring and discovering long after they leave primary school.
Aims:
Through our science curriculum, we aim for children to:
- build secure scientific knowledge and understanding across biology, chemistry and physics;
- ask thoughtful questions and use a range of scientific enquiries to investigate them;
- observe closely, gather evidence and draw conclusions from their findings;
- use scientific vocabulary accurately when explaining, discussing and presenting ideas;
- develop a genuine curiosity about the world and a desire to understand it more deeply;
- recognise the importance and relevance of science in their lives and the wider world; and
- become confident, inquisitive learners who enjoy exploring, investigating and finding things out.
