"Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future. What could be more important than that?"

Geography at Delabole Primary School:

At Delabole School, we want our children to be curious explorers of the world around them. Through Geography, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to understand their place in the world and the impact they can have on it.

Our Geography curriculum sits at the heart of our Enquiry approach, encouraging children to ask questions, investigate ideas and make meaningful connections between their learning and the real world. Through engaging topics, educational visits, residential experiences and fieldwork opportunities, pupils explore places near and far, learning about people, environments, resources and the ways our planet is constantly changing.

We are proud of our local community and want every child to develop a strong sense of identity and belonging, while also gaining an understanding of wider national and global issues. As children progress through the school, they build a secure knowledge of how physical and human processes shape the world and how people and environments influence one another.

A rich geographical vocabulary underpins our curriculum. New language is taught explicitly, revisited regularly and supported through visual representations, discussion and practical application. Through carefully scaffolded teaching and an inclusive approach, all pupils are supported to access, understand and succeed within the curriculum.

Above all, Geography at Delabole nurtures curiosity, responsibility and respect, empowering children to become informed, thoughtful citizens who care about their communities, their environment and the wider world.

Aims:

Through our Geography curriculum, we aim for all pupils to:

  • Develop a secure knowledge of the world's continents, countries, oceans and significant places, understanding both their physical and human characteristics.
  • Understand the processes that shape our planet and explore how people and environments influence one another over time.
  • Foster a strong sense of identity, belonging and stewardship by learning about our local area alongside national and global communities.
  • Ask questions, investigate geographical issues and use evidence to develop informed opinions about the world around them.
  • Build confidence in using geographical skills, including map work, fieldwork, data collection and the interpretation of a range of geographical sources.
  • Acquire and apply rich geographical vocabulary to explain, discuss and communicate their understanding effectively.
  • Develop curiosity, respect and responsibility, empowering them to become informed citizens who can contribute positively to the future of their communities and the wider world.
