Enriching Lives

Delabole Community Primary School is dedicated to enriching lives and the arts do much to achieve this for all children - whatever their background and ability. The Arts provoke thought, stimulate minds, challenge identity, broaden horizons, evoke feelings and captivate us with experiences that transcend everyday life. These experiences are both unique and personal but can also move and inspire others. We believe they can happen in a variety of places both within and beyond the school; they have the power to transform lives.

In our commitment to providing an inspirational learning environment which promotes creativity, we aim to immerse our learners in memorable learning experiences. The whole staff embrace the arts as an integral part of this process and as a means to enriching the curriculum. We aim to ensure that all children experience and develop knowledge and skills in a range of art forms under the broad headings of:

  • Literature - poetry, fiction, drama and storytelling
  • Performing Arts - music, dance, drama and storytelling
  • Visual Arts - craft, design, painting, sculpture, textiles and printmaking
  • Arts expressed through the use of multi-media - photography and digital arts

Art is developed by teaching through specific subjects discretely, through cross-curricular links, extra-curricular opportunities and whole school events both on and off-site. Children experience the arts through use of specialist advisors and artists, visits to art establishments and arts competitions and events.

Art and Design

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high quality Art and Design curriculum should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

We believe art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. Our children learn to make informed judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions. They explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists and designers. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches all our lives.

Aims

The National Curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
