PSHE at Delabole School

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education is a vital part of our curriculum and plays a key role in preparing children for life beyond the classroom.

Through PSHE, children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to make informed decisions, build positive relationships, look after their wellbeing and become responsible members of society. Learning is closely linked to our school values and supports children to understand themselves, their relationships and the wider world.

We place a strong emphasis on developing resilience, emotional awareness and self-confidence, helping children to understand that challenges can be overcome and that mistakes provide opportunities for growth and learning.

Aims

Through our PSHE curriculum, we aim for all pupils to:

  • Develop self-awareness, confidence and resilience.
  • Understand how to maintain their physical health and emotional wellbeing.
  • Build positive and respectful relationships.
  • Develop empathy and celebrate diversity.
  • Recognise and manage emotions appropriately.
  • Understand how to keep themselves safe, including online.
  • Develop the knowledge and skills needed to make informed choices.
  • Understand their rights, responsibilities and role within society.
  • Become aspirational learners who set goals and persevere in achieving them.

How We Teach PSHE

We use the Jigsaw programme to deliver a progressive and engaging PSHE curriculum across the school.

The curriculum is organised through six half-termly themes:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

These themes are carefully sequenced to develop children's understanding of themselves and others whilst supporting their personal development and wellbeing.

Learning is further enhanced through assemblies, enrichment opportunities, pupil leadership roles, themed events, anti-bullying activities, online safety education and our broader values-based approach.

Through this comprehensive programme, we aim to develop confident, respectful and resilient young people who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.

Relationships and Health Education

Relationships and Health Education forms a statutory part of our curriculum and supports children in understanding themselves, their relationships and the changes they experience as they grow.

Children learn about:

  • Families and positive relationships.
  • Friendship, respect and kindness.
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing.
  • Physical health and healthy lifestyles.
  • Online relationships and internet safety.
  • Personal safety and seeking support.
  • Growing, changing and puberty.
  • Diversity, inclusion and respect for others.

Learning is delivered in an age-appropriate and sensitive manner, helping children develop the confidence and understanding needed to navigate the opportunities and challenges of modern life.
